What is Conversion Therapy?
Conversion therapy refers to any practice that assumes certain sexual orientations or gender identities are inferior and seeks to change or suppress them.
✅ Why is the MoU Important?
The 2017 MoU clearly states that conversion therapy related to gender identity and sexual orientation (including asexuality) is:
Unethical
Potentially harmful
Not supported by evidence
This document builds on the 2015 MoU, which initially addressed only sexual orientation, and reinforces the commitment to protecting LGBTQ+ individuals from harmful practices.
The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is one of the signatories of the MoU. Check it here. The Birkbeck Counselling Association (BCA) is a Member Institution (MI) affiliate organisation of the BPC.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Igi Moon Chair of the MoU
Assistant Professor, Dept of Sociology, Warwick University, Senior Psychologist with GenderPlus
Chartered Counselling Psychologist
