Complex Trauma Part II: The Tavistock Model a phased based multi-modal service held within a psychoanalytic frame Dr Joanne Stubley This second talk by Joanne Stubley for the BCA complements her first talk in the September Forum about the psychoanalytic therapeutic model developed In the TavistockTrauma service. In this talk Joanne Stubley will discuss how the Tavistock model incorporates other therapeutic modalities. This event will be an in person event only and will not be available online. Working with individuals who have complex trauma presentations within an NHS setting requires innovation and creativity. These are often patients who would be seen as “not suitable for psychotherapy” and have often been excluded from care because they do not neatly fit into diagnostic categories of service organization. The Tavistock model has been developed to meet the patients where they are, which may mean using a variety of interventions (including art therapy, yoga groups and gardening) and other modalities (such as EMDR or mentalisation therapy). At the heart of the work is the relational experience and therefore a psychoanalytic understanding of the nature of the relationship (to the therapist and to the team) is vital. The model will be outlined and amalgamated case histories will illustrate common complex trauma presentations and the applications of an adapted psychoanalytic technique.
